Our intersection mural design has been sourced from the community,
voted on by the community, and will be painted by volunteers.
The mural design must fall within the area bounded by the 5-way intersection of Hillcrest, Roanoke, and Uplands (the “quintersection”), at least 3 feet from crosswalks, and on the roadway (not on sidewalks, curbs, or gutters).
Designs can be any shape, and don’t have to fill the intersection, but can’t exceed the area highlighted in red
The design should be no more than 5 colors, and ideally 3 or fewer colors
Colors should be flat (without shading/gradients) and without drop shadows
Avoid fine lines and small details
The design should be simple to paint so it’s easy to implement and maintain (since the volunteers painting the design will not be professionals)
The design should avoid the following:
Images or words that could be confused with crosswalks, stop markings, speed humps, other types of traffic control, or the yellow tactile domes on curb ramps
Brand names, for-profit imagery, and references to political campaigns
Anything that can be perceived as hurtful or harmful
Colors and shapes that could be confusing to people with visual impairments
